It’s a big moment when a baby loses her first tooth—and some parents want to make that memory last forever by turning the tooth into jewelry.
In one of the more creative accessories trends we’ve seen in a while, some parents are having their babies’ lost molar teeth cast in sterling silver and made into necklace pendants.
“Moms are always on the look-out for unique and personal mementos to remember the key milestones in their child’s life,” Linda Murray from the parenting website BabyCenter.com told ABC News. “Losing a tooth is a pivotal moment in a child’s development and symbolic of crossing the threshold from baby to big kid. It’s not too surprising that parents want to preserve the teeth in some form.”
Artist Jackie Kaufman, who creates these tooth pendants and sells them on the crafting website Etsy, said she’s had about 100 orders for the unique necklaces so far.
“This is better than the Tooth Fairy!” she says on Etsy. “No one ever knows what to do with the teeth once they have them…we make it into a beautiful piece of jewelry to wear forever.”
“Each one is different and unique,” she adds. “It is an organic look, and an exact replica of the original tooth.”
If you’re uncomfortable wearing your child’s actual tooth, you can also have sterling silver or gold molds made of the molar.
Kaufman told ABC she had recently been asked to make baby teeth necklaces for the HBO show Girls.
She isn’t the first artist to make unconventional keepsakes to celebrate baby’s big milestones; several Etsy sellers offer ‘breast milk jewelry’ to commemorate the breast-feeding months.

And only one has the time right
I’ll just unplug it for today
I’ll just unplug it for today”
